Poland is currently in the process of forming its new government following the general elections which took place in October. The conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party won the most seats in parliament, but failed to secure a majority. This puts them in a difficult position to form a coalition with other political parties.
Following this situation, Polish President Andrzej Duda tasked the outgoing Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, with forming a new government. However, without any strong coalition partners, there is a risk that the PiS party will fail in its bid to form a government.
On the other side of the political spectrum, Donald Tusk, a liberal leader and former Polish prime minister, waits in ambush. His liberal opposition party came second in the election and could potentially form a coalition with two other smaller parties. This alliance could give them a majority in Parliament.
Donald Tusk criticized President Duda’s decision to appoint Mateusz Morawiecki as head of government, accusing him of “playing for time”. He is convinced that his own appointment is inevitable and promises to restore ties with the European Union, as well as unlock EU funds frozen due to Poland’s controversial judicial reforms.
Relations between Poland and the European Union have become strained in recent years due to growing concerns about the state of democracy and the rule of law in the country. The blocking of EU funds is a punitive measure taken by the EU to try to get Poland to reverse its controversial judicial reforms.
The formation of the new Polish government will therefore be a key process for the future of the country and its relations with the European Union. The next few days will be crucial in determining whether the PiS party can successfully form a coalition or whether the liberal opposition will take over. One thing is certain, Poland is currently in a period of political transition which will have significant repercussions on its future.
