No woman should die while giving birth: Raising awareness on maternal health

Mother and Newborn Week, an awareness campaign on sexual health issues focused mainly on motherhood, was recently launched at the mother-child center in the commune of Ngaba. This initiative, supported by the Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Prevention, as well as UNFPA and other partners, aims to combat preventable maternal deaths.

The statistics are alarming: four women die every hour from childbirth or complications related to childbirth. This is why it is essential to raise awareness among the Congolese population of this problem and to increase efforts to prevent women from losing their lives while giving birth.

As part of this campaign, a theater group presented a strong message highlighting free motherhood. He recalled that no fees should be required from the prenatal period until delivery, whatever the situation or complications encountered. This message also calls on the First Lady, Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, patron of the event, to support midwives and work in partnership to improve their well-being.

The most experienced midwives were rewarded for their remarkable service, and the First Lady gave a guided tour of the mother-child center, interacting with the pregnant women present and providing them with valuable advice.

In addition to her encouraging presence, the First Lady also donated dignity kits to pregnant women and those in the post-natal period, in order to provide them with essential support in this stage of their lives.

This awareness campaign will continue its activities during the week, with a next stage planned at INPES.

It is essential to remember that no woman should die while giving life. It is a fundamental right for all women to receive necessary care during pregnancy and childbirth. By raising awareness and improving maternal health conditions, we can prevent these avoidable maternal deaths and provide a better future for women and children in the DRC.
