Title: MONUSCO ready to protect the population of Goma against the M23 rebellion

Introduction :
The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) is intensifying its efforts to put down the M23 rebellion and protect the population of Goma. The force commander, General Otávio Rodrigues de Miranda Filho, reaffirmed MONUSCO’s commitment to defy any threat and provide support to the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) in their fight against the rebellion. In this article, we will examine the measures taken by MONUSCO to respond to this critical situation.

Development :
MONUSCO launched jointly with the FARDC the “springbok” operation, aimed at putting an end to the M23 rebellion in the Goma region. To carry out this operation, MONUSCO deployed several contingents of blue helmets in strategic defensive positions, notably in the Kimoka valley, near Sake, approximately 30 kilometers from Goma.

General Otávio Rodrigues de Miranda Filho stressed the importance of these defensive positions to protect the town of Sake against any rebel attack. He also assured that the peacekeepers were ready to face any illegal force that tried to challenge them. MONUSCO is determined to fulfill its mandate to protect the populations of the DRC and to provide support to the FARDC.

In addition to these defensive measures, MONUSCO is committed to intensifying its efforts to protect civilians and provide humanitarian assistance to those affected by the conflict. It will continue to cooperate closely with the Congolese authorities and humanitarian actors to guarantee the security and well-being of the population.

Conclusion :
MONUSCO is fully committed to the fight against the M23 rebellion and the protection of the population of Goma. It plays a crucial role in providing support to the FARDC and setting up defensive positions to thwart any rebel attacks. MONUSCO remains committed to fulfilling its mandate and ensuring security and stability in the region. The situation remains worrying, but with the commitment of MONUSCO and international partners, hope for a peaceful resolution of the conflict remains.
