“The precariousness of Palestinian workers in the occupied West Bank: an unprecedented economic crisis”

Occupied territories: the difficult situation of Palestinian workers

The situation of Palestinian workers in the occupied West Bank has become extremely precarious following the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Many workers lost their jobs after Israel suspended their work permits, a measure that also affects those in Gaza. Economic activity is slowing down and many businesses have been forced to close their doors.

Noora Abdeen Khalifeh, owner of a traditional clothing store in Ramallah, describes the difficulties she encounters in maintaining her business. Her tailoring workshop in Gaza was destroyed during the attacks, while seamstresses in the West Bank are often unavailable due to school and childcare closures. Further complicating the situation are travel restrictions imposed by Israel and violence perpetrated by settlers.

The suspension of work permits in Israel, granted to nearly 200,000 Palestinians, including 40,000 working in the settlements, has dramatic consequences on the economy of the West Bank. The tourism sector is at a standstill, many employees find themselves unemployed and logistical problems are increasing for businesses.

Faced with this situation, Palestinian workers are forced to take alternative routes, extending their travel time to get to their workplace. The risk of violence at checkpoints and roads frequented by settlers is omnipresent. Additionally, many farmers have been prevented from harvesting their olives due to their proximity to settlements or the separation wall.

The Palestinian population therefore finds itself facing an unprecedented situation, with a drastic reduction in income and a reduction in spending. The resulting economic crisis has a direct impact on all sectors, aggravating the difficulties already present.

It is urgent to find solutions to support Palestinian workers and revive the economy of the occupied West Bank. Measures must be taken to guarantee the safety of workers and facilitate their travel, as well as to encourage the development of local employment. The international community must also play an active role in supporting economic initiatives and helping to resolve the conflict in the Middle East.
