“Death of Serge Welo: A tragic loss for Congolese politics”

The Congolese socio-political universe was shaken by sad news this Sunday, November 5, 2023. Serge Welo, former executive of Ecidé, a political party dear to Martin Fayulu, died in Brazzaville, in the Republic of Congo. Serge Welo was known for being one of the pioneers of the Congolese diaspora “Combatants” movement and for challenging Rwandan President Paul Kagame in 2006 in Montreal, Canada.

This committed young man was close to Congolese musical artists, who often mentioned him in their songs. He was also the brother of Jean-Jacques Wondo, expert and analyst on socio-political, security and military issues in the DRC. A few days before his death, Jean-Jacques Wondo had posted a touching message on Facebook for Serge’s birthday, expressing all his love and support.

According to sources, Serge Welo suffered a stroke during his stay in Brazzaville and was awaiting evacuation to Europe for better medical care.

Serge Welo was a loyal supporter of Martin Fayulu and was renowned for his determination. He had been arrested several times during political protests and had been present when Étienne Tshisekedi was sworn in as president-elect in 2011.

The disappearance of Serge Welo leaves a void in the Congolese socio-political universe. His commitment and determination will be remembered, and he will be missed by many activists and supporters. His death also serves as a reminder of the importance of the health and well-being of political actors, who often face stressful and difficult situations.

This sad event is a reminder of the fragility of life and the need to support and accompany those who fight for well-being and justice in their countries. Congolese politics has lost a courageous and committed man, but his legacy and his fight will continue to inspire future generations.
