Prevention and fight against sexually transmitted infections: Raising awareness among students of the Cirezi school complex
As part of its sexual and reproductive health rights program, the NGO SOS femmes et enfants en catastrophe (SOS FEC) organized an awareness session on the prevention and fight against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Cirezi school complex, located in the Kilibula district, in Uvira in the province of South Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
More than a hundred students participated in this event which aimed to deepen their knowledge of STIs and the risks they involve. Young adolescents were informed of the serious consequences of these infections, such as death, infertility and miscarriage. The need for safe sex and medical consultations were also emphasized.
The NGO SOS FEC/Uvira emphasizes that today’s young people are exposed to many risks linked to sexuality, partly because of the harmful influence of the digital world. The organization therefore calls on parents to take responsibility and dialogue with their children about the advantages and disadvantages of sex. It is essential to encourage young people to focus on their studies and avoid unprotected sex during adolescence.
The head of the Cirezi school complex in Kilibula, Bienvenu Bakungule, is also taking his own actions to combat STIs within the school. By regularly disinfecting the school’s latrines and involving students in maintaining the cleanliness of classrooms, it seeks to promote hygiene and reduce the risk of infections.
Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to STIs, especially during school holidays. The NGO therefore recalls the importance of continuing awareness and prevention efforts to protect young people against these potentially dangerous infections.
In conclusion, raising awareness among young people about STIs and their prevention is essential to promote healthy and responsible sexuality. The actions of the NGO SOS FEC/Uvira and the Cirezi school complex in Kilibula are laudable initiatives that contribute to protecting the health and well-being of adolescents in the region. It is crucial that awareness-raising efforts continue to ensure the sexual and reproductive health of younger generations.
