“Elections in the DRC: Risks of violence and major challenges for democracy”

Elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) promise to be particularly perilous, with the opposition facing increased government repression and an Independent National Electoral Commission seen as favorable to the ruling party. In a report by the NGO International Crisis Group entitled “Elections in the DRC: limiting the risks of violence”, we can read that the current political situation presents many challenges and risks of violence.

The report highlights fighting in the east of the country and other regions, resulting in more than a million citizens being deprived of their right to vote. Moreover, the opposition risks rejecting the results of the vote, which could lead to a national crisis. In this context, International Crisis Group fears an increase in population displacements, a crisis at the top of the State and increased tensions between communities.

To mitigate these risks, the government should allow all parties to campaign without intimidation or undue restrictions. Additionally, it is essential to ensure adequate funding for the Independent National Electoral Commission, so that it can pay its staff and combat voter extortion practices.

To promote legitimate and peaceful elections, the government must also take measures to limit abuse of power and create an environment conducive to a fair electoral campaign. This includes ensuring that security forces respect fundamental freedoms and punishing those responsible for violations. Additionally, reducing inflammatory speech, whether on social media or in the streets, is essential to improving the electoral climate.

In a context marked by persistent uncertainty, it is crucial to seek a minimum political consensus between the government and the opposition. Constructive dialogue and a willingness to compromise can help ensure more peaceful elections accepted by all.

It is therefore imperative that all political actors in the DRC commit to preserving the stability of the country and avoiding any escalation of violence. Elections must be seen as a democratic process essential for the development and prosperity of the country, and not as an opportunity to fight for power at all costs. Only a constructive and respectful approach to all will guarantee fair, transparent and peaceful elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
