“The alarming decline of democracy around the world: a threat to freedom and progress”

The decline of democracy around the world: a worrying trend

The latest report from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance reveals an alarming trend: the foundations of democracy are weakening across the world. For the sixth consecutive year, we are witnessing a “democratic recession”, a situation not observed since 1975.

According to the report, almost half of the world’s countries are experiencing a decline in their democratic systems. The problems are multiple, ranging from flawed elections to the restriction of fundamental rights. Of the 173 countries studied, 85 showed worrying results on at least one key indicator of democratic performance over the past five years.

This decline is particularly evident in political representation, with a notable decline in the quality of elections and the functioning of parliaments. The independence of the judicial system is also affected, calling into question the principle of the rule of law. Even historically successful democracies in Europe, North America and Asia are experiencing worrying declines.

In the area of fundamental rights, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly are also experiencing worrying declines, although not significant on a global scale. On the other hand, there have been improvements in the rule of law, following years of stagnating corruption.

Although there are signs of hope in some isolated countries, such as central Europe or parts of Africa, the overall picture remains very worrying. The “democratic recession” persists and threatens the very foundations of democracy across the world.

It is crucial to become aware of this situation and seek solutions to reverse this trend. Governments, citizens and international organizations must work together to strengthen democratic institutions, promote fundamental rights and fight corruption. Democracy is the pillar of freedom and progress, and it is our duty to protect and preserve it.
