Violent clashes continued for the fourth consecutive day in the western part of Kibumba, Nyiragongo territory, in the Virunga National Park area. The Congolese armed forces (FARDC) allied with local armed groups are engaged in fighting against the M23 rebels.
The fighting is concentrated in the area called “three antennas”, in the Buhumba grouping, in the Virunga park. The M23 rebels and their allies are trying to overflow through Virunga Park to attack the city of Goma.
These clashes have led to the shutdown of road traffic in the region, which particularly affects motorcycle taxi drivers who can no longer return to their territory. The inhabitants of Goma and Nyiragongo, who supplied themselves with charcoal and other food products on this axis, are also blocked.
Furthermore, reinforcements have reportedly been observed on the side of the M23 rebels, which does not bode well for the continuation of this war in the area.
It should be noted that these battles have already lasted several days without any significant progress being observed. The front lines remain frozen and the situation seems to be at an impasse.
It is essential to underline the humanitarian consequences of these clashes, with population displacements and difficulties in accessing basic needs such as food and drinking water. The situation is worrying and requires urgent intervention to protect civilians and find a peaceful solution to this conflict.
It is crucial that the international community supports efforts to end this violence and create lasting peace in the region. The Congolese population deserves stability and security that will allow them to rebuild their country and continue their daily lives without fear.
It is therefore essential that the various stakeholders engage in constructive dialogue and seek peaceful solutions to end this cycle of violence. The lives of Congolese citizens depend on it.
