“The Democratic Republic of Congo is preparing to implement Universal Health Coverage thanks to the operationalization of the Public Health Law”

The operationalization of the Public Health law in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was at the center of a workshop organized by the Ministry of Health, Hygiene and Prevention from September 29 to 30, 2023. This workshop aimed to implement places the necessary implementing measures for the implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the International Health Regulations (IHR) on Congolese territory.

According to the Minister of Health, Hygiene and Prevention, the implementation of UHC in the DRC is a priority of the government and this modification of the Public Health law is an irreversible step in this process. UHC aims to ensure access to quality health services for all citizens, in order to reduce health inequalities.

During this workshop, experts from the ministry as well as representatives of public institutions identified the legal needs to implement law enforcement measures. A road map has been established for the drafting and adoption of these measures, with the creation of a technical commission responsible for their execution.

This work to operationalize the Public Health law is a crucial step to guarantee the effective implementation of Universal Health Coverage in the DRC. It will make it possible to define the services involved in this implementation and to put in place the necessary systems to ensure optimal health safety.

The adoption of these implementation measures will also make it possible to strengthen collaboration between the different health actors in the DRC and to ensure a coherent and coordinated approach in the implementation of UHC.

In conclusion, the workshop to operationalize the Public Health law in the DRC made it possible to define the next steps for the implementation of Universal Health Coverage. This process is a priority for the Congolese government in order to guarantee access to health services for all citizens and to promote maximum health security.
