Firm measures to combat urban violence
Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne recently presented a plan aimed at strengthening actions against urban violence in France. Faced with an increase in violent incidents, particularly after the death of a young person in Nanterre, the government decided to take strong measures to restore authority and guarantee security in the neighborhoods concerned.
Among the measures announced, we find the creation of republican action forces made up of police officers, magistrates and social workers. These forces will be deployed in certain neighborhoods to ensure security and provide appropriate judicial, educational and social responses. For greater efficiency, these deployments will be managed locally by the mayor, the prefect and the public prosecutor.
The government also intends to tackle the issue of parental responsibility. Faced with the resignation of some of them from their educational duties, community service sentences will be considered for those who evade these responsibilities. In addition, parents will now be financially responsible for damages caused by their minor children, whether or not they are separated and whether they live with their child or not.
As far as offenders are concerned, stricter measures are also planned. Supervision by soldiers will be put in place for young delinquents, in order to instill in them values of respect and authority. In addition, the fine for non-compliance with the curfew will be multiplied by five, rising to 750 euros. Those who incite violence on social media may also be temporarily banned.
For mayors who wish, municipal police will now be able to carry out judicial police acts, which broadens their scope of action. This measure could help to strengthen the police presence in neighborhoods and allow more rapid intervention in the event of disturbances.
Finally, an envelope of 100 million euros will be released for the repair and reconstruction of buildings affected during the riots. This involves preserving the buildings of the Republic, which were particularly targeted during this violence.
These measures are part of a broader commitment by the government to restore order and tranquility in neighborhoods affected by urban violence. They show the desire to take concrete measures and to hold both offenders and parents accountable. It remains to be seen the real effectiveness of these actions and the impact they will have on security and social cohesion in these neighborhoods.
