News: The “Kananga-Mbuji Mayi” road construction project raises questions
The construction file for the “Kananga-Mbuji Mayi” road in the Democratic Republic of Congo takes an unexpected turn. The General Inspectorate of Finance (IGF) recently asked the Egyptian group SAMCRETE Engenering to justify the amount of more than 24 million USD which was allocated to it for the realization of this project.
In an October 23 press release, the IGF raised concerns about the transparency and legitimacy of funds allocated to SAMCRETE Engenering. However, the number 1 of the Egyptian company quickly responded to the accusations, rejecting outright the allegations made against his company. He claims that the IGF did not have access to the relevant elements of the file and denounces the populism of this institution.
Remember that the construction project of the “Kananga-Mbuji Mayi” road, with a length of 188 km, was entrusted to SAMCRETE Engenering for a total amount of 302 million USD. A first deposit of 27 million USD was paid to launch the work. However, the work is currently blocked due to the ban on SOFIBANQUE from paying the deposit, following concerns raised by the IGF.
This situation arouses concern among the populations of Mbuji-Mayi and Kananga, who depend on this road for their daily activities. Recent torrential rains have already caused considerable damage to National Road number 1 (RN1) in the Kasai Central province, thus accentuating the urgency of its rehabilitation.
It is important to closely monitor the development of this matter, as SAMCRETE Engenering prepares to take the matter to the competent authorities to defend its reputation and obtain compensation. In the meantime, local populations continue to suffer from the consequences of the dilapidated state of this crucial road.
