New structure of fuel prices in the DRC: A tariff adjustment for market regulation

News: New structure of fuel prices in the DRC

The Ministry of National Economy of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) recently announced a new fuel price structure at the pump. This decision, published on October 23, 2023, aims to readjust prices according to different regions of the country.

According to the new structure, the price of gasoline will increase by 12% in the eastern part of the country, reaching 3,970 Congolese francs (1.58 USD) per liter. In the West zone, gasoline will be sold at 3,225 Congolese Francs (1.29 USD), an increase of 8%. As for the South zone, the price of gasoline will rise to 3,915 Congolese francs (1.72 USD), also representing an increase of 12%.

As for diesel, the price will now be 4,020 CDF (+12%) in the Eastern part, 3,215 CDF (+8%) in the Western zone, and 4,145 CDF in the Southern zone.

The rise in fuel prices was a necessary condition to encourage oil companies in the southern part of the country to reopen their service stations and import new stocks. Indeed, economic operators in the oil sector in the provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu and Haut-Katanga had started a strike to demand financial compensation.

This new price structure will help regulate the fuel market and ensure stable supplies across the country. It also reflects the economic realities and costs associated with the importation and distribution of fuels in the different areas of the DRC.

The provinces of Haut Lomami, Haut-Katanga, Kasaï, Kasaï-central, Kasaï-Oriental, Lomami, Lualaba, Sankuru and Tanganyka make up the South zone, while the provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri make up the East zone. .

This revision of fuel prices in the DRC provides a response to the concerns of oil companies while ensuring better price fairness across the country. It remains to be seen how this new structure will be received by consumers and how it will impact the national economy in the months to come.
