Cassiterite production in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to increase in the first half of the current year, according to a report from the Technical Cell for Coordination and Mining Planning (CTCPM). In total, a production of 15,832.95 tonnes of cassiterite was achieved, coming from both the industrial and artisanal sectors.
In the industrial sector, the Alphamines company stands out by recording a production of 11,014.62 tonnes, thus representing 99% of the country’s industrial production. The SAKIMA company produced 119.71 tonnes, or 1% of industrial production.
Regarding artisanal production, a total of 4,698.63 tonnes of cassiterite was produced. The provinces of Haut-Lomami and Maniema are the main producers, with 38% and 29% respectively of artisanal production. The province of Tanganyika is positioned in third position with 16% of production, followed by South Kivu with 12% and North Kivu with 4%.
Cassiterite production is mainly divided between the industrial sector (70%) and the artisanal sector (30%). This distribution highlights the importance of industrial players in the production of this crucial mineral for the electronics industry and the manufacturing of electronic components.
It is essential to emphasize that the DRC is one of the world’s leading producers of cassiterite, and this increase in production demonstrates its potential in this sector. However, it is also important to ensure that this mining is done in a responsible and sustainable manner, ensuring that the environment and workers’ rights are protected.
The mining sector in the DRC has experienced major challenges in the past, particularly with regard to transparency and governance. But efforts are being made to improve the situation and ensure that this natural resource really benefits the country’s development.
In conclusion, cassiterite production in the DRC is increasing in the first half of this year, with a significant contribution from the industrial sector. However, it is essential to remain vigilant and ensure responsible mining to maximize the economic and social benefits of this valuable resource while preserving the environment.
