Architecture challenges for resilient communities
On October 21, 2023, the second conference on architecture and housing was held in Butembo, in the province of North Kivu. This event, organized as part of the International Day of Architecture and Habitat, brought together architects and urban planners around the theme of “architecture for resilient communities”.
During this conference, speakers highlighted the importance of architecture in improving the quality of life of populations. They addressed topics such as the integration of issues related to global warming and sustainable development. Indeed, architecture plays a key role in the creation of comfortable buildings adapted to current challenges.
However, a major challenge arises in this area. Non-compliance with the law governing the architectural profession has become widespread, with many people posing as architects without possessing the required qualifications. Papy Kasomo, vice-president of the National Order of Architects, underlined the importance of applying the law to protect the profession and guarantee the quality of services. Persons illegally practicing the profession of architect may be subject to sanctions provided for by law.
The participants in this conference expressed their satisfaction with the new information and knowledge they were able to acquire. Some architecture students particularly highlighted the existing confusion between the functions of architect, engineer, town planner and surveyor, and appreciated the clarification provided during the discussions.
On the sidelines of the conference, an auction of works of art created by local artists was organized, thus helping to highlight the creativity and talent of artists in the region. At the end of the day, a certificate ceremony took place to reward the participants who participated in the architecture competition.
This second conference on architecture and housing in Butembo highlighted the crucial issues of architecture for resilient communities. He also underlined the need to enforce the law governing the architectural profession in order to preserve the quality of services and protect the interests of professional architects. These types of initiatives help to raise awareness and train stakeholders in the architectural sector, with the aim of creating a more sustainable built environment adapted to the challenges we face.
