Dear reader, Dear reader,
Today, we would like to share with you some burning news concerning the world of media in Guinea. Indeed, a demonstration by journalists was recently violently dispersed by security forces, reminding us of the dangers these information professionals face on a daily basis.
On Monday October 16, Guinean journalists gathered to protest against restrictions on access to the Guinea Matin news site. Since mid-August, it has been impossible for Guinean citizens to connect to this online newspaper, a measure which considerably limits press freedom in the country. Unfortunately, during this peaceful demonstration, the security forces intervened with brutality, manhandling the journalists present, including those who had simply come to cover the event. A worrying situation which raises many questions about the rights of journalists in Guinea.
This is unfortunately not the first time that such acts have occurred in Guinea. In recent months, cases of journalists being attacked by security forces have multiplied on the ground. The testimonies are alarming. Abdoulrahmane Bah, correspondent for TV5 Monde in Guinea, was himself attacked by soldiers during a report last May. He recounts this traumatic experience where he was threatened with death by a soldier who pointed his rifle in his face. Similar situations recur regularly, creating a climate of fear and insecurity for Guinean journalists.
These attacks against journalists are a real affront to freedom of expression and democracy in Guinea. The media play an essential role in the functioning of a society by providing the information necessary to keep citizens informed and aware of the issues around them. Without a free press, citizens are deprived of a fundamental right and a voice to express themselves.
It is crucial that the Guinean authorities take immediate measures to guarantee the safety of journalists and allow them to do their work with complete peace of mind. Press freedom should not be seen as a threat, but rather as a pillar of democracy and progress. Respect for the rights of journalists and the fight against impunity for attackers must be absolute priorities to prevent such situations from recurring in the future.
In conclusion, it is essential to support and protect Guinean journalists who risk their lives to inform the public. The attacks on them are an attack on freedom of expression and must be condemned. We hope that the Guinean authorities will take the necessary measures to guarantee a safe and favorable environment for press freedom in the country..
