“Return of security and peaceful cohabitation: a new hope for the chiefdom of Bahema Baguru in Ituri”

Civil society in the chiefdom of Bahema Baguru, located in the territory of Djugu in Ituri, is delighted to see a gradual return of security in their region. This progress allows a rapprochement between the communities of the Lopa, Jako-Ndahura groups of Baguru and that of Sesele in the Walendu Djatsi sector.

For more than two months now, residents of Sesele have been able to go to the Lopa and Jina markets to stock up on food products such as cassava chips and vegetables. For their part, the populations of the Lopa and Jako-Ndahura groups head daily towards the Sesele group to exploit the gold resources of the Morgue quarry. Women, for their part, frequently go to the Nyustu-Bidona markets in Matete, which is also in the same customary entity.

This peaceful cohabitation is the result of an awareness campaign led by the NGO Action pour la Paix et la Concorde since last July. Thanks to this awareness, members of different communities realized the importance of cohabitation and decided to get closer.

This rapprochement between communities is also noted in other entities, such as the chiefdom of Bahema North and Walendu Tatsi and Pitsi, where populations frequent the markets of Saliboko and Dzud’a together. All these communities hope that the entire area will be pacified, thus allowing the more than one million seven hundred thousand displaced people, according to humanitarian figures, to return to their villages.

This gradual return of security in the Bahema Baguru chiefdom is a glimmer of hope for the local population. It reflects the efforts made by civil society and organizations to promote peaceful cohabitation and reconciliation between communities. However, there is still much work to be done to guarantee lasting peace throughout the Ituri region and allow people to rebuild their lives and regain stability.
