Forums for popular expression are an essential way for the population to make their voices heard and discuss the social problems that affect them. This is why in Kimpese, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, journalist Joly Toko organized a meeting to allow the community to discuss subjects such as the insecurity caused by the “Kuluna” and the need for a place of sale suitable for market garden products.
However, despite the importance of these discussions, local leaders were conspicuously absent from this forum. Joly Toko, who finances these meetings himself, has never received financial support to organize them. For him, the main thing is to allow residents to express themselves and find solutions to the problems they encounter.
Some of the concerns raised in previous discussions have already led to concrete solutions, such as regulating overcharging for electricity consumption. This time, the participants proposed solutions to combat insecurity, guarantee autonomy in the distribution of electrical energy and facilitate the sale of market garden products through the construction of dedicated sheds.
It is regrettable to see that local leaders did not seize this opportunity to take part in the debates and find solutions to the concerns of their community. However, whether or not there is an official presence, these forums for popular expression remain a valuable tool for giving voice to the voiceless and promoting social change.
It is therefore essential to continue to organize these community meetings and to support individual initiatives like that of Joly Toko. The active participation of leaders is crucial, but the will of the people and the search for collective solutions can also bring significant change.
By encouraging and supporting these forums for popular expression, we can help create a more open and inclusive society, where every voice counts and social issues can be addressed collectively and constructively.
