Clashes between local armed groups and the M23 have resumed in the province of North Kivu, more precisely in Bwiza and Mudugudu, in the groups of Bishusha and Tongo. According to local sources, these fighting broke out early in the morning of Saturday October 21, thus putting an end to a few days of calm observed on the front line.
Testimonies report that the local armed groups who occupied Bishusha center withdrew this morning without a fight. This locality, located 15 km from Kitshanga, would have been occupied by the M23 rebels. In addition, heavy weapon fire was heard in Kizimba, 6 km from Kitshanga, causing great panic and psychosis among the local population.
Faced with this situation, some residents decided to leave the town of Kitshanga, in the territory of Masisi. Some are heading towards the MONUSCO base and the EAC camp, while others choose to go to Mweso. They are fleeing the progression of the M23 rebels towards this city, concerned for their safety.
This series of fighting and population displacements demonstrates the fragility of the situation in the region. Tensions between local armed groups and the M23 continue to create great instability, endangering the lives of civilians and compromising efforts to stabilize the region.
It is essential that measures are taken to end these clashes and protect the civilian population. The presence of MONUSCO peacekeeping forces is crucial to ensuring security in the region and facilitating lasting solutions to the conflict.
