“Launch of the civic and electoral education program in the DRC: Young people called to actively participate in elections”

The launching ceremony of the civic and electoral education program, initiated by the United States Embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), took place this Thursday, October 19, 2023. The objective of this program is to raise awareness young people about the importance of their participation in the electoral process and to fight against speeches of distrust towards the latter.

The United States Ambassador to the DRC, Lucy Tamlyn, accompanied by her communications advisor, Jessica Monica, chaired the ceremony and presented certificates to the facilitators trained for this project. These facilitators, including students from the Protestant University of Congo, will be responsible for transmitting the content of the training to young people through exchange sessions and citizen cafés.

In her speech, Lucy Tamlyn highlighted the United States’ commitment to supporting the DRC in preparing for the 2023 elections and promoting participatory youth democracy. She also recalled the importance of young people’s voices in the decision-making process and encouraged them to get actively involved.

The coordinator of the Yali program, Kalonji Bilolo Trésor, stressed that citizen action is not limited to voting, but that it also involves interactions with elected officials and exchanges of opinions. He also stressed that this program does not support any specific candidate, but aims to empower young people and strengthen their knowledge of the Congolese electoral system.

Importantly, this program is available for free online, with clear, non-partisan content. It aims to inform and raise awareness among young people so that they can make informed decisions during elections.

This initiative by the United States Embassy in the DRC is a step forward to strengthen civic education and allow young people to become more involved in the political life of their country. It helps promote democracy and encourage citizen participation, essential values for the development of a free and fair society.
