“Poignant testimony: the fight for democracy in Chad”

Popular protest in N’Djamena: an urgent call for democracy

October 20, 2022 marked an unprecedented day of mobilization in N’Djamena, the capital of Chad. Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets to demand free and transparent elections, as well as the departure of the military in power. Unfortunately, this peaceful march was violently repressed by the authorities, causing numerous victims.

Among these demonstrators, Stéphane Ngueto Djimrangar, a young 30-year-old poet, had a traumatic experience. An unemployed graduate, like many young people in the capital, he participated in this march in the hope of changing the future of his country. Unfortunately, he was arrested and then deported to Koro Toro prison, a place of detention renowned for its inhumane treatment.

In his cell at Koro Toro, Stéphane managed to compose poetic verses, thus testifying to his ordeal and that of his fellow detainees. In the hope that the world could understand what they went through, he hid these poems in stolen notebooks. Living conditions at Koro Toro were appalling: lack of hygiene, physical and psychological violence inflicted by former detainees.

A year later, Stéphane still bears the scars of this ordeal, including an infection contracted in prison. Despite everything, his determination to make his voice heard and that of all those who have passed through Koro Toro remains intact. He dreams of publishing his poems and seeing his prison clothing preserved in a museum, so that the world can become aware of the reality of the situation.

This poignant testimony highlights the urgency of democracy in Chad. The demonstrators, including Stéphane, braved the risks to demand concrete changes. It is necessary to support their fight for freedom of expression and respect for human rights. International mobilization is essential so that such repression does not happen again and so that the Chadian people can finally enjoy democratic governance.

The images of these protests and the stories of witnesses must not be forgotten. They have the power to raise awareness around the world about the alarming situation in Chad. It is necessary to stay informed and support actions that aim to promote justice and democracy in this country.

In conclusion, the testimony of Stéphane Ngueto Djimrangar and other demonstrators in N’Djamena highlights the crucial importance of fighting for democracy and human rights. These efforts must not be in vain. It is our duty to support their cause and push for freedom and justice to prevail in Chad.
