Training on securing elections in the DRC: Commanders of the Congolese National Police (PNC) are actively preparing to ensure security during the upcoming elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In Bukavu, in the province of South Kivu, at least 40 commanders of PNC units began intensive training on securing elections. This initiative aims to strengthen the capacities of security forces and guarantee a peaceful and secure electoral process.
The training, which began on Saturday October 14 and will continue until Thursday October 19, is supervised by Divisional Commissioner Vital Awachango, Director General of PNC Training Schools. The objective is to train 40 trainers in each province, who will then be deployed on the ground to ensure security during the elections scheduled for December 20.
This training is supported by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Civil Police (UNPOL). It is part of resolution 2666, adopted in December 2022, which asks MONUSCO to respond to the needs of the Congolese government in terms of electoral security.
In addition to Bukavu, similar training sessions are organized simultaneously in Goma, in the province of North Kivu, and in Bunia, in the province of Ituri. This approach makes it possible to train a sufficient number of police officers to ensure the security of the electoral process throughout the country.
It is essential to secure elections in the DRC, given their importance for the country’s stability and democracy. By organizing its fourth legislature since 2006, the DRC is showing its desire to consolidate its democratic institutions and ensure a peaceful political transition.
The Congolese government is committed to working with the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) to guarantee the security of the electoral process. The training of PNC commanders demonstrates this commitment and the desire to strengthen the capacities of the security forces in order to ensure free, fair and transparent elections.
In conclusion, the training of PNC commanders on securing elections in the DRC is an important measure to guarantee stability and security during the next election. It demonstrates the Congolese government’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and democratic electoral process. Thanks to the support of UNDP and UNPOL, this training strengthens the capacities of security forces and contributes to the consolidation of democracy in the DRC.
