UN Security Council encourages Congolese government to develop comprehensive disengagement plan
The United Nations Security Council recently reacted to the Congolese government’s request for an accelerated withdrawal of the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Council encouraged the government to develop a comprehensive disengagement plan by November this year.
In its statement, the Security Council underlines the importance of reaching a political settlement of the crisis between the DRC and Rwanda. It also supports regional initiatives such as the Nairobi and Luanda processes.
The Security Council insists on the coordination and complementarity of political and military initiatives in the DRC. In particular, he calls for an end to the advances of the M23 armed group, subject to UN sanctions, and full compliance with the group’s withdrawal commitments and the confinement of its members.
Furthermore, the Security Council underlines the importance of the elections scheduled for December 2023 in the DRC. He calls on the Congolese authorities to ensure peaceful, transparent and credible processes, by guaranteeing the effective participation of women at all stages of the electoral process.
The Security Council says it is ready to decide on the future of the UN Mission in the DRC, its gradual withdrawal and the concrete measures to be taken during this withdrawal.
This UN Security Council statement highlights the importance of achieving a political solution in the DRC and ensuring transparent and inclusive electoral processes. It also encourages the Congolese government to develop a comprehensive disengagement plan, thus showing the UN’s willingness to support the country’s sovereignty and autonomy.
It is essential to note that this declaration by the UN Security Council constitutes an important step in the process of stabilizing the DRC and strengthening its democratic governance. By encouraging the government to develop a comprehensive disengagement plan and conduct credible elections, the UN is helping to bring lasting peace to the region.
In conclusion, it is crucial that the Congolese government seizes this opportunity offered by the UN Security Council and actively works to develop a comprehensive disengagement plan. This will not only strengthen the country’s sovereignty, but also promote regional stability and guarantee fair and inclusive elections for the Congolese people.
