Kampala Conference 2023: Global experts gather to discuss current geopolitical issues

Kampala, the capital of Uganda, is currently hosting the Kampala Geopolitics Conference 2023, which brings together experts and decision-makers from around the world to discuss current geopolitical issues. This conference, which began on Tuesday, October 17, promises stimulating discussions on crucial issues.

In the opening session, moderated by Dr. Susanne Conrad of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the discussion focused on the future of Somalia following the withdrawal of ATMIS, the peacekeeping force of the African Union. Speakers stressed the importance of maintaining international engagement in the region in order to prevent destabilization of Somalia and the Horn of Africa.

Another round table addressed the theme of “African cultural soft power”. Artists and experts gathered to discuss the role of culture and creativity in Africa’s development. Ugandan filmmaker Barbra Atusasiire called for increased financial support for the cultural and creative industries, while musician Phina Mugerwa highlighted the importance of women’s empowerment in the sector. Professor Philip Luswata, for his part, encouraged the promotion of local talents.

Another lively debate took place in the session on the great power scramble in Africa. Speakers praised African leaders’ ability to navigate the divergent interests of China, the United States and Russia. They stressed the importance for Africa to preserve its independence and not become a mere piece in the global power game.

Finally, the issue of economic inclusion, in particular the need to bridge the digital divide, was also addressed. The experts stressed the importance of putting in place proactive policies to guarantee equitable access to technologies, paying particular attention to women and young people.

This first day of the Kampala Conference was therefore rich in discussions and perspectives. The next two days promise to be just as exciting. The Kampala Conference thus confirms its status as an essential forum for addressing global geopolitical issues.
