“The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza: the urgency of international aid”

Gaza: an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe

The situation in Gaza has become a real humanitarian catastrophe, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. The Israeli army continues to shell the region in retaliation for a bloody Hamas attack in Israel. Gazans are trapped in this violence, facing shortages of water, electricity and other essential supplies.

Faced with this critical situation, Israel and the United States reached an agreement to restore water supplies to the southern Gaza Strip. However, these measures remain insufficient to meet the scale of the population’s needs.

The President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, affirmed that the policies and actions of Hamas do not represent the Palestinian people. He stressed that only the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was legitimate to represent the Palestinians.

At the same time, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced the sending of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians. He expressed his unconditional support for the Palestinian cause and offered 30 tons of humanitarian aid which will be sent soon.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has sounded the alarm that the Middle East is on the brink of an abyss. He called on Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, highlighting the lack of water, electricity and other essential supplies in the region. Antonio Guterres also called on Hamas to release Israeli civilian hostages immediately and unconditionally, while condemning the Palestinian Islamist movement’s attacks against Israel.

The situation has also sparked global reactions. In Brazil, more than a thousand people demonstrated in Rio de Janeiro in support of Israel and against Hamas terrorism. However, the reception of refugees from Gaza is not unanimous in Egypt, where some believe that Gazans should stay in the Gaza Strip so as not to lose their land.

Faced with this tragic situation, it is crucial that the international community intensify its efforts to achieve an immediate ceasefire and guarantee access to humanitarian aid for the population of Gaza. A political and diplomatic solution is necessary to end this crisis and allow the region to regain stability and peace.
