Displaced teachers from the territory of Rutshuru, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, have decided to go on strike starting Monday, October 16. This decision was announced following a general meeting held the previous Sunday in Kanyarutshinya.
The teachers concerned come from schools in the Rutshuru territory, as well as the Kibumba and Buhumba regions, located north of Nyiragongo. Their main demand concerns the improvement of their living conditions in the various displacement sites where they have been temporarily assigned to supervise displaced students.
The teachers’ union emphasizes that this strike measure is provisional, pending a response to the numerous requests addressed to the EPSP (Primary, Secondary and Professional Education) authorities for several weeks.
This situation highlights the challenges faced by teachers in areas affected by population displacement and armed conflict. In addition to precarious living conditions, they must face threats to their safety and that of their students.
It is essential to recognize the crucial role of teachers in society. They are responsible for the transmission of knowledge and the training of future generations. Their work cannot be overlooked or ignored.
It is therefore urgent that the authorities take into consideration the legitimate demands of teachers and take concrete measures to improve their living and working conditions. This includes ensuring their safety, providing adequate resources for teaching, and fair and equitable remuneration.
Education is a fundamental pillar of the development of a society. By investing in education and supporting teachers, we are investing in the future of our country and our communities.
It is essential to raise public awareness of this situation and support teachers in their fight for better living and working conditions. Teachers deserve our respect and support because they play a vital role in building a better future for all.
