“Avdiïvka: the advance of the Russian army threatens the Ukrainian resistance”

The Russian army continues its advance on the Ukrainian front, notably with significant progress around the town of Avdiïvka, in eastern Ukraine. This offensive, which aims to encircle the city, represents a symbolic victory for Moscow, since Avdiïvka has been a symbol of Ukrainian resistance to Russian assaults since 2014.

Recent statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin confirm the advances of his army in the region. According to him, Russian troops are improving their positions throughout the area, including in Avdiivka. This “active defense” strategy shows Russia’s determination to consolidate its control over this part of Ukraine.

The capture of Avdiïvka is more symbolic than strategic for Moscow. This town, which is home to a large coking plant, has been a symbol of Ukrainian resistance since 2014. After briefly falling into the hands of pro-Russian separatists in July 2014, it returned to Ukrainian control and has since marked the front line in the region.

In recent weeks, Russian forces have managed to take control of areas north and south of the city, thus tightening their grip around Avdiivka. The ultimate goal would be to roll back the Ukrainian military and consolidate Russian control over the region, particularly the regional capital of Donetsk.

It is important to note that despite Russian claims, Ukrainian forces continue to claim to repel the Russian offensive in the Avdiivka region. The Ukrainian military claims that the enemy is constantly trying to break through its defenses, but so far without success.

The situation in Avdiïvka is worrying, with more than 1,600 civilians still present in the town. Evacuations are difficult due to incessant bombing. Before the Russian offensive, the town had around 30,000 inhabitants.

It is also worth mentioning that this Russian offensive comes after several months of Ukrainian counter-offensive in the east and south of the country. Despite Western military support, the Ukrainian army recaptured only a few villages. Vladimir Putin recently declared that this counter-offensive had failed, while noting that Russia was aware of the preparations for further offensive operations by the opposing side.

It is essential to closely monitor developments in Avdiivka and the wider region. The consequences of this Russian offensive have already caused loss of life and exacerbated tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The future of this part of Ukraine is uncertain, and it is crucial to maintain careful monitoring to understand the issues and consequences of this situation.
