Title: Journalists trained in the fight against malaria in DR Congo: a commitment to save lives
Introduction :
As part of their mission to strengthen local civil society and improve health services in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), around twenty journalists recently participated in a training workshop on the fight against malaria. Organized by the National Malaria Control Program (PNLP) and the NGO Impact Santé Afrique, this training aimed to raise journalists’ awareness of this deadly disease which is wreaking havoc in the DRC. After completing the training, the journalists signed a charter of commitment to support the NGO in its mission to end malaria in the country.
Malaria, a scourge in the DRC:
Malaria remains one of the main causes of morbidity, hospitalization and death in the DRC, particularly among children under 5 and pregnant women. As the second largest contributor to the malaria burden in Africa and third in the world with over 27 million cases in 2022 and around 25,000 deaths, it is crucial to take effective measures to combat this disease.
Training of journalists: a crucial role in raising awareness and providing information:
Journalists have an essential role to play in transmitting accurate information and raising public awareness about the fight against malaria. This is why this training workshop was organized to equip these communication professionals so that they can become reliable and effective information relays.
During the training, journalists were informed of the latest advances in the fight against malaria, the prevention and treatment methods available, as well as the initiatives put in place by the NGO Impact Santé Afrique and the PNLP. They were also made aware of the consequences of malaria on the health of populations, with emphasis on the most vulnerable groups.
A strong commitment to the fight against malaria:
At the end of the training, the journalists demonstrated their commitment by signing a commitment charter with the NGO Impact Santé Afrique. They are committed to actively supporting awareness and information actions on malaria, and thus contributing to the fight against this deadly disease.
Conclusion :
Training journalists on the fight against malaria in the DRC constitutes a crucial step in efforts to raise awareness and inform the population about this disease. Thanks to their role as information relays, journalists can play an essential role in the fight against malaria and contribute to reducing the number of cases and deaths. Their commitment through signing the charter demonstrates their desire to actively participate in this public health issue.. It is essential to continue supporting these awareness initiatives in order to end malaria in the DRC and save lives.
