“Illegal barriers on the Bunia road axis: an unacceptable situation which arouses indignation among users”

News in Bunia: Illegal barriers on the main road arouse indignation

Bunia, October 10, 2023 – In the province of Ituri, the presence of 27 illegal barriers along the road linking Bunia to Mongbwalu has provoked indignation among users of this road. These barriers require the payment of sums ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 Congolese Francs (approximately 1 to 5 US dollars) to the soldiers and armed groups present, thus creating a climate of discontent among the people using this 85 kilometer road, essential for access mining areas.

Motorcycle taxi drivers, particularly affected by these extortions, do not hide their anger. Jean Marie Uzele, a taxi driver, strongly denounces this unacceptable situation: “The number of barriers manned by FARDC soldiers on this road amounts to 27. Drivers are forced to pay exorbitant amounts at each barrier. Cars pay 2 000 FC, large vehicles such as MAN 5,000 FC, and trucks 10,000 FC. We ask the governor of the province to order the removal of these barriers.”

Faced with these accusations, Lieutenant Jules Ngongo Tshinkudi, spokesperson for the army in Ituri, affirms that measures will be taken: “We take these allegations seriously and we welcome this awareness. We are actively working to eliminate illegal barriers. However, we strongly condemn the acts committed by elements of the armed forces who exceed the law in these checkpoints. Military justice will do its job and punish this undisciplined behavior.”

It is important to emphasize that this road, rehabilitated thanks to the support of the provincial government during the state of siege, is of great economic importance for the province of Ituri.

This news highlights the need to fight against illegal practices and guarantee the safety of road users. The government and relevant authorities must intensify their efforts to eliminate these illegal barriers which hinder the economic development of the region and affect the daily lives of residents.

The renovation and strengthening of security measures on this road should therefore be a priority to ensure the free movement of people and goods, thus promoting the development of Ituri province.
