Repatriation of Congolese refugees from Angola to the DRC – Images of the return and reintegration process
As part of a joint effort between UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and the governments of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Angola, a repatriation process was put in place to allow the return of Congolese refugees in Angola to their country of origin.
UNHCR is facilitating this repatriation by air, in order to ensure the safety and dignity of the people concerned. Recently, 82 Congolese refugees arrived in Kananga, in the province of Kasaï-Central, after choosing to return to their original environments. These returnees are among those who fled the violence linked to the Kamuina Nsapu phenomenon.
This repatriation process is part of a tripartite agreement signed between UNHCR and the governments of the DRC and Angola. It aims to facilitate the return of refugees in secure and dignified conditions. Returnees receive an aid kit to help them reintegrate, as well as other programs aimed at facilitating their return.
Among the repatriated people, Marie Ngalula expresses her joy at finding her family after several years of exile. It represents the hope of these refugees who aspire to rebuild their lives in their country of origin.
UNHCR, for its part, is making efforts to facilitate the reintegration of returnees. In certain areas identified for return, health centers and schools are built or rehabilitated, to allow refugee children to reintegrate the Congolese education system and to facilitate access to health care for returnees.
The repatriation of Congolese refugees from Angola to the DRC is a complex and delicate process, but it represents a glimmer of hope for these people who can finally envisage a return to normal life. UNHCR and relevant governments will continue to work together to facilitate this process and support returnees in their reintegration.
Soon more details and images of the repatriation and reintegration process will be available, providing a concrete overview of this initiative and the positive impacts it generates.
