News in the Democratic Republic of Congo: MONUSCO takes measures against peacekeepers
The UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) recently announced that it had taken strict measures against some of its peacekeepers deployed in the country. According to a press release, MONUSCO reports “serious misconduct” committed by members of its armed operation. Elements of the Monusco police reportedly discovered them later in the evening, some managed to escape while others were apprehended and placed in detention.
It should be noted that MONUSCO had already taken measures to combat the frequentation of brothels by its soldiers, particularly in Beni. However, this recent incident highlights the persistence of this problem within UN contingents deployed in DR Congo.
