“Resumption of fighting in Mali: Escalation of tensions between the Malian army and the CSP rebels”

Article on current events in Mali: Towards a resumption of fighting between the Malian army and the CSP rebels

Since October 7, 2023, a relative pause in the fighting has been observed in Mali between the Malian army and the rebels of the Permanent Strategic Framework (CSP). However, this truce seems to be coming to an end, with the Fama-Wagner convoy moving again this morning of October 13. This convoy, which had been stationed in Anefis since last Saturday, resumed its progress towards the camps in the Kidal region, which the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (Minusma) must leave soon.

A delicate situation is looming in Tessalit, where Minusma must soon leave its base. Malian soldiers and Wagner fighters were airlifted to this location, causing some discontent among the Chadian peacekeepers present there. The issues of control of this disputed area between the Malian army and the CSP rebels are becoming more complex.

In a press release, the Malian army indicated that the Fama were continuing their advance to take possession of Minusma’s holdings. The Fama-Wagner convoy, made up of around a hundred vehicles, is currently in Techanaght, around fifteen kilometers north of Anefis. The CSP rebels claim to be surrounding them and are preparing for the next battles, which they consider imminent.

Furthermore, an incident was reported on the night of Thursday October 12 to Friday October 13 in Konna, in central Mali. Private trucks transporting equipment as part of the Minusma disengagement were attacked, but no demands were made at this stage.

This possible resumption of fighting in Mali underlines the fragile nature of the security situation in the country. It is essential that stabilization and pacification efforts continue to guarantee the security of populations and allow a return to lasting peace. The international community must continue to support Mali in its quest for stability and development.
