Moise Katumbi’s candidacy file for the DRC presidential election: a first obstacle to overcome
Moïse Katumbi, former governor of Katanga, wanted to submit his candidacy for the presidential election of the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, this first step did not go as smoothly as expected. Indeed, the submission of the file scheduled for this Tuesday did not result in its official reception by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).
Moïse Katumbi’s team presented itself with photocopies of the necessary documents, while the CENI required the originals to proceed with the authentication of the file. Two essential documents, the criminal record extract and the nationality certificate, were missing from the copies provided. However, according to those close to Moïse Katumbi, these documents do indeed exist and are in their possession.
Faced with this disagreement over the presentation of copies rather than originals, Moïse Katumbi’s camp decided not to argue and promised to return the next day, with the entire file, to finalize the application submission. Hervé Diakese, spokesperson for the Katumbi camp, stressed that this request to present the originals posed no problem and had no legal consequences.
It is important to note that this procedure for requesting originals complies with the electoral legislation in force in the DRC. All applications are treated equally, to ensure fairness and transparency in the electoral process.
However, this situation highlights the first obstacles that candidates must face on their path to the presidential election. Administrative requirements may be strict, but they are necessary to ensure the validity and legitimacy of applications.
Pending the finalization of Moïse Katumbi’s candidacy, it is hoped that this situation will be resolved quickly and that the electoral process will take place in compliance with democratic rules and equal opportunities for all candidates.
