The diplomatic activism of the president of the Gabonese transition, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, continues with a series of consultations and visits to the sub-region. After meetings in Equatorial Guinea, Congo-Brazzaville and the Central African Republic, he went to Chad and will also travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The main objective of these trips is to obtain rapid reintegration of Gabon into the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), from which the country has been suspended since the August 30 coup. General Oligui Nguema thus requested a meeting with Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi, with the aim of pleading the cause of the transition and highlighting the legitimate and inevitable nature of his takeover, which according to him was aimed at preventing violence. post-elections.
Gabon seeks to normalize its situation and regain its place within ECCAS. During the country’s suspension, the rotating presidency of the organization was handed over to Equatorial Guinean President Obiang Nguema and the organization’s headquarters was temporarily transferred to Malabo. The meeting between General Oligui Nguema and Felix Tshisekedi is therefore of capital importance for Gabon’s return to the regional organization.
Felix Tshisekedi’s support for the position of ECCAS and the African Union is crucial, although the institutional situation is delicate. General Oligui Nguema presented the latest developments in the transition to the organization’s mediator, Faustin-Archange Touadera, including the appointment of parliamentarians and the announcement of a national conference planned for next April.
Beyond his meetings with heads of state, General Oligui Nguema also took the time to pay tribute to the memory of the late Chadian President Idriss Déby during his visit to N’Djamena. He described Déby’s son, Mahamat, as a “brother in arms”, thus highlighting the strong links between the different political figures in the region.
The determination and commitment of the president of the Gabonese transition in his diplomatic efforts demonstrate his desire to quickly reintegrate Gabon into ECCAS. The normalization of the political situation and the support of the heads of state of the sub-region are essential steps to guarantee the stability and development of the country.
