“Security situation in the DRC: fighting between the “Wazalendo” self-defense groups and the M23 rebels rages in the east of the country”

The security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a major concern. Violent fighting between the “Wazalendo” self-defense groups and the M23 rebels, supported by Rwanda, continues to rage. In a recent joint briefing, Patrick Muyaya, Government Spokesperson, and Fifi Masuka, Governor of Lualaba Province, addressed this situation.

During the briefing, Patrick Muyaya recalled the position of the Congolese government which, while respecting the agreed ceasefire, supports the compatriots who defend their homeland. He stressed that the areas where the operations are taking place are under rebel occupation and that the government has been following Luanda’s road map since November 2022.

However, the pre-cantonment process planned after the ceasefire is encountering difficulties due to the attitude of the M23 rebels. Patrick Muyaya denounced acts of violence, such as the Kishishe massacres, documented by different organizations. He stressed that in the face of such atrocities, compatriots cannot remain passive and must defend their territory.

The Congolese government rejects any attempt to co-opt or stigmatize communities and ensures the protection of all. He put in place mechanisms to supervise people wishing to join the army reserve in order to defend the homeland.

In the town of Kitshanga, “Wazalendo” self-defense fighters regained control after violent clashes with M23 rebels. They were given a hero’s welcome by the local population.

The situation in the DRC therefore remains tense, but the government continues to closely monitor events and seeks solutions to ensure the security of the population and put an end to the violence. He is committed to protecting all communities and encourages compatriots to join the Army Reserve to defend their homeland.
