Liberia: Preparation and prevention before general elections
As general elections in Liberia fast approach, major international institutions are calling for restraint from political leaders to avoid tension during the vote and announcement of results. A joint United Nations and ECOWAS mission recently met with the main candidates to mitigate potential disputes and encourage a peaceful and respectful environment for electoral procedures.
The ECOWAS observation mission initially noted some concerns regarding the preparations for the vote. Last July, the National Elections Commission did not seem to inspire confidence among voters. However, since then, corrective measures have been put in place to strengthen the credibility of the electoral process.
Another source of concern lies in the behavior of political leaders who, in some cases, have made speeches inciting violence. In discussions with the candidates, the joint mission called for moderation and urged leaders to respect their peaceful commitments, adopt a constructive approach and comply with electoral procedures. They were also asked to ensure that their supporters act in the same way.
Strengthening security measures is also a major concern ahead of the elections. Police forces have increased their numbers to ensure security throughout the electoral process.
The call for an investigation into the violence in Lofa County last week is another sign of the importance given to preventing tensions and potential conflicts.
As Liberia prepares to choose its new leaders, it is crucial to ensure an electoral process that is transparent, peaceful and respected by all stakeholders. Collaboration between international institutions, local authorities and political leaders is essential to create a climate conducive to free and fair elections.
The whole world is carefully watching the elections in Liberia, hoping that the country will continue its path towards democracy and stability.
