King Felipe of Spain entrusts the formation of the new government to Pedro Sanchez
In a tense political context, marked by the failure of the conservative Alberto Nunez Feijoo to obtain a majority in the Spanish Parliament, King Felipe of Spain decided to instruct the president of the outgoing government, Pedro Sanchez, to form a new government coalition. This decision comes as Spain faces many challenges, both economically and socially.
Pedro Sanchez will have the difficult task of gathering a majority in Parliament in order to remain at the head of the Spanish government. To do this, he will have to succeed in obtaining the support of the Catalan separatists, which promises to be a major challenge given the latter’s demands for amnesty.
The president of the outgoing government has already announced his intention to form a “progressive and inclusive” coalition, relying in particular on the left-wing Sumar party, led by Labor Minister Yolanda Diaz. This approach aims to bring together political forces in favor of a change of course in national politics.
Consultations to form this coalition will begin tomorrow, with the aim of bringing together a majority not only for the investiture, but also for the duration of the government mandate. Pedro Sanchez has until November 27 to obtain the confidence of Parliament. If this fails, new elections will automatically be called for mid-January.
This decision by King Felipe of Spain marks a turning point in Spanish politics, as the country faces numerous challenges, such as the economic crisis, regional tensions and the rise of populism. It remains to be seen whether Pedro Sanchez will manage to form a solid coalition capable of meeting these challenges and meeting the expectations of the Spaniards.
