About-face, backtrack… Martin Fayulu, political opponent and president of the Engagement for Citizenship and Development (ÉCiDé) party, has just announced his candidacy for the presidential election scheduled for December 20 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This decision follows his previous abstention and marks a surprising turnaround in his position regarding the current electoral process.
In an interview with France 24, Martin Fayulu explains the reasons for his commitment and the challenges he intends to face during this election. While affirming his desire to obtain credible and transparent elections, he does not hesitate to criticize the regime in place, still considering himself the “president-elect” of the previous presidential election.
Felix Tshisekedi, current president and leader of the Sacred Union political platform, is directly targeted by Martin Fayulu’s attacks. The latter describes it as an “electoral hold-up” and accuses him of having done worse than his predecessors. Martin Fayulu calls for national unity and says Congo must remain a united country to achieve prosperity and play a major role in Africa.
The Congolese opponent strongly criticizes the management of the rule of law by the regime in place, highlighting the prolonged detention of journalists and politicians, which, according to him, hinders democracy. He calls for the confidence of the Congolese, with a view to building the Congo dreamed of by Patrice-Emery Lumumba, national hero.
This turnaround by Martin Fayulu in his decision to participate in the presidential election taking place next December in the DRC raises questions. His virulent criticism of the current president and his questioning of the rule of law highlight the political tensions that continue to weigh on the country.
In conclusion, Martin Fayulu, after having long chosen to boycott the electoral process, finally announces his candidacy for the presidential election in the DRC. His criticism of the regime in place and his desire to build a united and prosperous Congo make him a candidate to follow closely in the coming months.
