“UN mission in Nagorno-Karabakh: assessment of humanitarian needs in a conflict-torn region”

Nagorno-Karabakh: UN mission arrives to assess humanitarian needs

Since the renewed tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia following the Azerbaijani military offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh, the humanitarian situation in the region has been critical. Faced with this emergency situation, a UN mission arrived in the enclave to assess the humanitarian needs there.

The arrival of this UN mission is of capital importance, because it has been almost 30 years since the organization had access to this region. Its role will be to assess the needs for food, water, medicine and housing for Armenian refugees who have fled the enclave.

Indeed, since the start of the conflict, more than 100,000 Armenians have left Nagorno-Karabakh, fearing reprisals from Azerbaijan. This situation has caused a major humanitarian crisis, with thousands of people displaced and living in precarious conditions.

The sending of this UN mission comes after France expressed its concern over the fact that Azerbaijan only authorized this mission after the mass departure of Armenians from the region. It is essential that concrete measures are taken to ensure the security and well-being of the Armenian populations who wish to remain in the enclave.

The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh has already left nearly 600 dead and the situation continues to be worrying. The fighting has caused widespread destruction in the region and there is a need to rebuild infrastructure and provide urgent humanitarian aid to those affected by the conflict.

The presence of the UN mission in Nagorno-Karabakh is an important first step in responding to urgent humanitarian needs. It is now essential that the international community provide financial and logistical support to help rebuild the enclave and ensure the protection of civilian populations.
