Morocco designated as host country for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (CAN)
In a surprise announcement, Morocco was chosen as the host country for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (CAN), after the withdrawal of its competitors, including Algeria. This decision was officially announced by Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), during a press conference in Cairo.
Morocco, which had already hosted the CAN in 1988, was awarded the organization of the event after the other candidate countries, such as Algeria, Zambia and a joint candidacy from Nigeria and Benin, announced their withdrawal. Although these countries made their presentation, they chose to support the Moroccan candidacy, particularly within the framework of its joint candidacy with Spain and Portugal to organize the 2030 World Cup.
This decision reinforces Morocco’s status as a major country in the field of football in Africa. In addition to having already organized the CAN in the past, the country also experienced a historic run during the 2022 World Cup, with the Atlas Lions who thrilled the whole country by reaching the quarter-finals.
The announcement of the award of CAN 2025 to Morocco was welcomed with joy and pride by Moroccan supporters. The streets of Rabat were invaded by thousands of people celebrating this victory for Moroccan football.
This decision by CAF also marks an important step in the development of football in Africa. By entrusting the organization of the African Cup of Nations to countries that have already proven themselves, such as Morocco, this ensures the full success of the event and guarantees quality infrastructure for the players and the supporters.
In conclusion, the choice of Morocco as host country for the 2025 African Cup of Nations is a decision which demonstrates CAF’s recognition of the country for its commitment and excellence in the field of football. Moroccan fans can already prepare to experience an exciting competition full of surprises during CAN 2025.
