“Northern Mali: Departure of the MSA from the CSP, growing tensions and divisions within the armed coalition”

As tensions intensify in northern Mali between the Malian army and the Permanent Strategic Framework (CSP), a new fissure appears within this coalition of armed groups. The Movement for the Salvation of Azawad (MSA) recently announced its departure from the CSP, highlighting the growing divisions within the alliance.

This decision by the MSA comes after several weeks of fighting between the CSP and the Malian army, following the accusation of violation of the 2015 peace agreement. The CSP took up arms and attacked the bases of the Malian army in Bourem and Léré. However, the MSA had already distanced itself from previous attacks and CSP communiqués, and ultimately severed all ties with the coalition.

The main reason for this break lies in the MSA’s concerns about growing insecurity in the Ménaka region, where they are directly confronted with deadly attacks from the Islamic State group. For the MSA, the priority is to fight against these terrorist groups and protect civilian populations. They believe that engaging in other conflicts would divert the attention and resources needed to effectively fight jihadists.

Despite their departure from the CSP, the MSA remains committed to the implementation of the 2015 peace agreement. They choose to maintain their alliance with the Malian Armed Forces and a loyal faction of Gatia, another armed group present in the region of Ménaka and Gao. This demonstrates their desire to remain faithful to the objective of pacification of the region, while continuing their fight against terrorism.

On the other hand, certain factions of Gatia decided to support the CSP, considering this war as a maneuver orchestrated by the government in Bamako. These internal differences highlight political tensions and rivalries within the region, further complicating the search for lasting solutions for peace and security in Mali.

In this complex situation, it is essential to take into account the concerns and interests of all actors involved. The ultimate objective must be to achieve consensus and effective cooperation to guarantee stability and security in northern Mali. Dialogue and mediation will play a crucial role in finding a lasting solution to this conflict.
