Repression in Iran: Extreme violence against families commemorating the “Women, Live Freedom” movement continues unabated

The repression in Iran against the commemorations of the anniversary of the “Women, Live and Freedom” movement continues to spark outrage around the world. Since September 16, the symbolic date marking the start of protests in 2022, Iranian authorities have stepped up efforts to prevent families from celebrating the memory of loved ones who died during the protests. Arrests, death threats and direct attacks are commonplace in this campaign of repression orchestrated by the regime.

One of the most recent cases that has caused a lot of noise is that of the Heidary family. On September 21, security forces invaded the village where this family resided to prevent any commemoration of the death of Javad Heidary, a protester killed during the first demonstrations. The roads leading to the village were blocked and the internet connection was cut, isolating the family from the rest of the world. Security forces even fired tear gas and live ammunition at the family’s home, injuring several members, including children.

This extreme violence only confirms the Iranian regime’s desire to silence families and all those who dare to commemorate the death of their loved ones. House arrests, threats and summonses are increasing, creating a climate of fear and intimidation throughout the country.

The Iranian authorities particularly feared the date of September 16, the anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman who died during her detention by the morality police. This tragedy was the starting point of a protest movement which shook Iranian society. Since then, every day marks the anniversary of the death of a protester killed by security forces, bringing back painful memories of past events.

Faced with this brutal crackdown, many families who had planned to hold memorial ceremonies had to cancel their plans after facing severe pressure and threats. The violent attack on the Heidary family is a tragic example of how the Iranian regime attempts to silence families and stifle any form of dissent.

It is crucial to continue to defend human rights in Iran and to amplify the voices of families who are courageously resisting this repression. By sharing these stories and making our voices heard, we can help raise global awareness of the plight of Iran and support families’ struggles for justice and freedom.
