Results of the senatorial elections in France: stability of the right, difficulties for the Macronists and historic victory for the left in Paris

The results of the senatorial elections in France in September 2023 confirmed the stability of the Upper House, dominated by the right, while putting the Macronists in difficulty. This election was also characterized by the return of the National Rally to the Palais du Luxembourg, with three elected officials.

The right, led by Gérard Larcher, retained its senatorial majority and remains the largest group in the Senate. Bruno Retailleau, head of the LR senators, underlined the stability and importance of the LR group within the Upper House. For him, this is a new failure of the President of the Republic, illustrating the disconnection of Macronism with the field.

These results reinforce the seriousness of the work and the spirit of independence of the Senate. Gérard Larcher welcomed the continuity of this institution as an essential counter-power to democracy.

On the other hand, the Macronist camp experienced difficulties during these senatorial elections. The Secretary of State for Citizenship, Sonia Backès, was defeated in the second round in New Caledonia, which should lead her to leave the government. Brigitte Bourguignon, former Renaissance minister, was also defeated in Pas-de-Calais. The Macronists united within the RDPI group in the Senate risk seeing their numbers decline due to their weak local roots.

On the left, the Socialist Party intends to remain the second largest group in the Senate, with a goal of bringing together 100 left-wing senators in the chamber. In Paris, the union of the left and environmentalists won a historic victory by sending eight senators to the Luxembourg Palace, while the divided right obtained only four seats.

In conclusion, the senatorial elections in France in September 2023 confirmed the domination of the right in the Senate, while putting the Macronists in difficulty. The left has achieved some successes, notably in Paris, winning a historic victory. These results reflect current political dynamics and their impact on the composition of the Upper House.
