“President Tshisekedi takes the reins of stability in the DRC: withdrawal of MONUSCO, security, and next elections”

President Félix Tshisekedi’s recent statements during his speech to the UN General Assembly have attracted a lot of attention. The Congolese Head of State addressed several important subjects, including the withdrawal of MONUSCO, insecurity in the east of the country and the upcoming elections.

President Tshisekedi stressed the need to accelerate the withdrawal of MONUSCO, the UN mission in the DRC, in order to ease tensions between it and the Congolese population. He also insisted on the fact that the DRC must take charge of its own stability and become the main actor in its destiny.

The Head of State expressed his disappointment at the inability of peacekeeping missions to resolve armed conflicts and protect civilians in the DRC. He declared that it was illusory to continue to count on MONUSCO to restore peace in the country.

Furthermore, President Tshisekedi welcomed the sanctions taken by the United States against Rwanda for its support for the M23 terrorists. He also called on the UN Security Council to sanction all perpetrators of serious crimes committed in the DRC.

Concerning the next elections, the President of the Republic confirmed that they would take place in December, at all levels of institutions with elective mandate. He assured that measures would be taken to guarantee the transparency, inclusiveness and credibility of the polls. Invitations have already been sent to international institutions and organizations specializing in election observation.

With these declarations, President Tshisekedi shows his determination to take charge of the stability of the DRC and to resolve the problems that persist in the country. It calls for greater accountability from the international community and highlights the need for sanctions for those responsible for serious crimes. The upcoming elections will be an important test for the country, and President Tshisekedi seems determined to ensure their transparency and legitimacy.
