Accusations of illegal mining by Chinese company in Punia, Maniema
Maniema province in the Democratic Republic of Congo is currently facing accusations of illegal mining by a Chinese company in Punia territory. According to local communities, this company, called GOLD MOUNTAIN MINING GROUP, operates gold and diamond mines without having obtained the necessary legal authorizations.
Local communities also denounce the fact that this illegal exploitation is supported by an honorary advisor close to the Presidency of the Republic, as well as by heavily armed soldiers who secure the area. This situation endangers the environment of Punia and violates the rights of local communities.
According to the communities’ statement, Chinese workers are protected by security forces who do not hesitate to use live ammunition against citizens who attempt to assert their legitimate rights or oppose illegal activities. A recent incident was reported where a police officer allegedly shot diggers at a mining site, although the motive for the violence was not known.
Faced with this situation, the communities of Punia are demanding the immediate expulsion of the Chinese workers, as well as disciplinary measures against the authorities involved in this matter. They also call for legal proceedings so that sanctions are taken against all those responsible. The communities also demand the application of the polluter pays principle to obtain compensation for damage caused to the environment, as well as the withdrawal of mining titles held by the Chinese company.
If these demands are not taken into account, the communities of Punia plan to carry out large-scale citizen actions to assert their rights. They are therefore calling for help and solidarity to confront this illegal exploitation and preserve their territory.
It is essential to bring these accusations to light and open a thorough investigation to verify the veracity of these allegations. Illegal exploitation of natural resources deprives local communities of their rights and destroys the environment. It is therefore essential to take firm measures to put an end to these practices and guarantee the protection of the rights of local communities.
