Security in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains a major challenge, particularly in the east of the country where the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) face the RDF-M23 coalition. However, significant progress has been made in the fight against armed groups, as evidenced by the recent arrest of members of the “Mobondo” militia in Kongo Central province.
The Mobondo militia was born out of a land conflict between the Teke and Yaka communities, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people and the destruction of villages. This intercommunal violence began in Kwamouth territory in June 2022, following an increase in customary fees imposed by the village chief of Masiambe. Tensions quickly spread to other provinces, including Kongo Central.
The Congolese government, aware of the urgency of the situation, has intensified its efforts to defend the nation and eliminate armed groups. The arrest of these Mobondo attackers is a crucial step in this fight. It was made possible thanks to the operations of security forces and coordination between different government agencies.
However, it is important to emphasize that long-term stability and security in the DRC require a comprehensive and sustainable approach. In addition to the military response, it is essential to invest in the socio-economic development of affected communities and to promote reconciliation and inter-community dialogue.
DRC President Félix Tshisekedi reaffirmed his commitment to peace and security during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly. He argued for a gradual withdrawal of MONUSCO (UN Stabilization Mission in the DRC) and called for transparent elections to strengthen the legitimacy of the institutions.
Continuing these efforts, combined with strengthened regional cooperation, is essential to achieving lasting peace in the DRC. Continued international support is also needed to support security and development initiatives in the country.
Thus, the capture of the Mobondo attackers is a significant step forward, but much remains to be done to guarantee the security of all Congolese citizens. The DRC continues to courageously fight against armed groups and aspires to a peaceful and prosperous future for all its inhabitants.
