“Armenian separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh are negotiating a withdrawal and a return to peace with Azerbaijan”

Armenian separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh recently announced their intention to negotiate with Azerbaijan the withdrawal of their troops from the region. This decision follows the conclusion of a ceasefire between the two parties. The negotiations are being conducted under the auspices of Russian peacekeepers, who have intervened to end recent violent clashes.

The objective of these negotiations is to organize the troop withdrawal process and allow the return of citizens displaced by the fighting. The parties also discuss the procedure for entry and exit of citizens of Nagorno-Karabakh.

As part of these negotiations, Armenian separatists began to surrender their weapons to Russian peacekeeping forces. So far, six armored vehicles, more than 800 small and anti-tank weapons, as well as almost 5,000 munitions have been handed over. This handover of weapons is in accordance with the cessation of hostilities agreements.

At the same time, the Russian peace contingent also provided humanitarian aid to the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh, who are facing a humanitarian emergency situation. More than 50 tons of aid were delivered and more than 800 displaced people were accommodated, the majority of them children.

Despite these positive developments, the situation in the region remains tense. The capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, Stepanakert, is surrounded by the Azerbaijani army, causing great concern among residents. Basic utilities, such as electricity, gas, food and communications, are lacking, forcing people to hole up in caves for fear of further violence.

Much remains to be done to restore peace and stability in the region. The ongoing negotiations between Armenian separatists and Azerbaijan are an important first step, but it will also be necessary to ensure that the humanitarian needs of local populations are met. The international community must continue to support mediation efforts and pressure the parties to respect ceasefire agreements and work towards a lasting solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
