UN General Assembly: ECOWAS refuses to give in to the putschists in Niger

Title: UN General Assembly: the firm position of ECOWAS against the putschists in Niger

Introduction :

During the UN General Assembly currently being held in New York, a burning issue was addressed: the putsch that occurred in Niger last July. The United States tried to convince the countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to soften their position towards the putschists, but without success. Faced with the firmness of ECOWAS, the junta in power in Niger is now under pressure to release President Mohamed Bazoum and allow his return to the head of the country.

I. The crisis exit plan proposed by the United States

From the start of the UN General Assembly, American diplomats sought to rally the ECOWAS countries to a compromise with the putschists in Niger. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken even attempted to bring together several West African heads of state to discuss the plan. Unfortunately, this attempt was unsuccessful. ECOWAS reaffirmed its clear and firm position on the putsch and refused to change its mind due to American pressure.

II. The firmness of ECOWAS in the face of the putschists

Faced with the attempt to destabilize the legitimate government of Niger, ECOWAS has taken a firm position from the start. During the last summit of ECOWAS heads of state, a resolution was adopted to condemn the putsch and demand the return of the elected president. With this in mind, no West African president responded to Antony Blinken’s invitation. The foreign ministers were sent as representatives of the heads of state to maintain the official position of ECOWAS.

III. International pressure on the ruling junta

Faced with ECOWAS’ refusal to compromise with the putschists, the junta in power in Niger is now under increasing international pressure. The US Secretary of State issued a statement calling for the release of President Mohamed Bazoum and his return to legitimate power. This position reinforces the isolation of the junta and highlights the importance of respecting democratic institutions in Niger.

Conclusion :

The UN General Assembly highlighted the firm position of ECOWAS against the putschists in Niger. Despite attempts by the United States to convince West African countries to reconsider their position, ECOWAS has remained adamant in its condemnation of the coup. International pressure on the ruling junta is intensifying, and it is becoming crucial to support the return to democratic order in Niger.
