THE WIRE OF SEPTEMBER 21, 2023: Volodymyr Zelensky seeking international support in Washington
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Washington on Thursday to meet with US President Joe Biden. Zelensky’s goal was to convince the United States to continue providing significant aid to Ukraine in its confrontation with Russia.
During the meeting, Joe Biden announced that military aid would be provided to Ukraine, including air defense equipment. However, the long-range ATACMS missiles requested by kyiv were not included in this aid. Despite this, Biden stressed the importance of US support for Ukraine and said there was “no alternative” to a favorable vote by Congress on a new aid package.
Zelensky’s visit to Washington follows a series of Russian attacks in eastern Ukraine. A recent attack left 13 injured in the town of Kurakhove, about 50 kilometers from Donetsk. This city, which is controlled by Ukraine, has been regularly targeted by Russian attacks for several months. Additionally, a woman was killed in Russian shelling of the town of Zelenivka, according to the governor of the Kherson region.
After his visit to Washington, Zelensky traveled to Canada to meet with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau expressed Canada’s support for Ukraine and promised to continue supporting kyiv in its conflict with Russia.
As the situation in Ukraine remains tense, Zelensky is seeking international support to confront Russian aggression. His visit to Washington and Canada aims to strengthen alliances and obtain financial and military support to deal with the current situation.
The question of aid to Ukraine is also being discussed in the American Congress, where certain Trumpist elected officials are expressing their opposition to a new aid package. However, Joe Biden insisted on the importance of this support and is counting on the discernment of parliamentarians to overcome political obstacles.
Zelensky’s visit to Washington and Canada shows the importance of international solidarity in difficult times. In the face of Russian aggression, it is essential that countries stand with Ukraine and provide it with the support necessary to confront this crisis.
