The role of First Ladies on the international scene is no longer limited to simple protocol functions. They are increasingly engaging in causes and initiatives, thus helping to shape the political and social landscape of their country. It is with this in mind that the OPDAD (Organization of African First Ladies for Development) conference on gender equality in Africa was held.
Under the theme “We are all equal: Closing the gender gap in Africa”, the First Ladies present discussed the actions carried out in their respective countries to promote gender equality. Education, maternal and child health, women’s economic empowerment, the fight against gender-based violence and women’s leadership were at the center of the discussions.
One of the notable speakers at this event was Jill Biden, the First Lady of the United States of America. Her presence demonstrates her commitment to supporting African First Ladies in their efforts to fight against all forms of discrimination against women.
The Vice-President of OPDAD and First Lady of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, recalled the 10 commitments made by African First Ladies to close the gender gap. She stressed the importance of not sacrificing these commitments through inaction, because future generations will judge us.
The conference also provided an opportunity to take stock of the unifying campaign for gender equality in Africa, launched last June during the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of OPDAD in Kinshasa. The results were scrutinized and new perspectives were considered to continue progress towards gender equality on the continent.
This conference illustrates the desire of African First Ladies to play an active role in promoting gender equality. Their collective commitment and concrete actions contribute to changing mentalities and creating an environment conducive to the realization of the rights and autonomy of women in Africa.
It is encouraging to see that First Ladies are coming together and putting in place initiatives to fight gender inequalities. Their voice and influence can help advance policies and practices for gender equality, paving the way for a more equitable future for all African women.
